Environmentally Friendly

Always design a thing by considering its next larger context - a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.

Eliel Saarinen

We have shown our commitment to the environment through control and minimisation of the impact on the environment by working in a sustainable manner. We have embraced the continuous increase in efficiency at our manufacturing facility made possible investing in precision quality machinery and manufacturing software, which were instrumental in decreasing quantity of off-cuts and errors. Any off-cuts that remain, both profile and reinforcement are made into samples, which are supplied to architects, builders and trades people. We aim towards 0 profile and reinforcement waste at our facility every month. Any assembled windows and orders that were cancelled are given away for free to existing clients.

Double Glazed Windows and Doors emphasis on the environmentally sound practices can be witnessed in any area of the business. Our people are discouraged from using print media, and all of our brochures, reports, quotes and other official correspondence are sent electronically. For service repair calls, (for Chinese made windows and doors purchased from our competitors), staff aim for a practical and most cost effective solution, and we will never recommend replacing the window or door frame unless it cant be repaired. Clients replacing their old upvc windows, can choose to have them recycled, at a small cost. At the moment, the costs of transportation and recycling are relatively expensive, and in order to continue to offer our clients value for money, we do not recycle products not manufactured by us free of charge. We are unable to bear the cost of recycling if we did not supply the original windows and we have only been employed to repair or remove/ install them.

We strive to recycle as much as we can and also use recycled products, where possible to assist with transportation or installation. At this stage, we only use virgin upvc profile in manufacture of windows and doors, but we are exploring the possibility of using a recycled composite material as a reinforcement alternative in our windows and doors. Even rubber and metal found in most old windows can be recycled back into reusable low maintenance building products. In addition we pick suppliers that have a environmental credentials, comply with the latest legislation and monitor a continuous improvement program.

Environmental impact of PVC, Wooden and Aluminium windows. Selected quotes from various sources -

For windows, one of the most important PVC applications, the available studies differ in methodology but come to comparable conclusions. All studies compare at least the three alternatives; PVC, wood and aluminium windows. Two studies compare wood/aluminium with further materials; one with steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metal and another with polypropylene. The stainless steel and the non-ferrous metal windows seem to have potentially more impact than all other frame materials (which can be easily reproduced due to the relatively high demanding metal extraction and processing route). All analysed studies (that contained data and models of a high enough quality for the study to be acknowledged), concluded that any worthy competing frame material (PVC, aluminium, wood/aluminium and wood) has its individual strengths and weaknesses...

It appears that the most promising potential for lowering environmental impacts of windows is expected to be through the optimisation of the design and specific construction processes, which means increasing the quality of the windows with respect to their main function of saving heating energy in the use phase (e.g. lowering the specific heat loss). Raising the amount of secondary material used, or lowering the amount of material required for the same function, may be another ground for optimization of the constructions. Therefore the choice of material is of rather minor importance, as long as the material can provide the required system quality of a window.

Dr. Baitz, M. et al, Life Cycle Assessment of PVC and of principal competing materials (Commissioned by European Commission), Stuttgart University, 2007.

Life Cycle Analyses of PVC and timber in window profiles were recently conducted by Entec UK Ltd for the DETR (now DEFRA) in early 2001 and also for Manchester City Council in September 2001. In analysing the various impacts across the lifecycle, they compared data from other LCA studies. Entec found that, the difference found by the German Federal Environmental Agency between the environmental performance of wood and PVC profiles, are consistent with the findings of the DETR 2000 study such that, there are only marginal differences in the environmental performance. This will particularly be the case where recycled PVC-U is used in the profiles and lead and cadmium based stabilisers are avoided.

Manchester City Council: Environmental and Financial Life Cycle Costs of Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride and Wood Windows, Entec UK Limited, 2001.

Many people are under the impression that timber windows are better for the environment because they are more 'natural'.In fact, the timber industry itself has not been without its own environmental critics. Historically, it was the environmental campaigns against the timber industry which helped give a high profile and an increasing momentum to the emerging environmental movement around the world. Leading environmental organisations claim, for example, that some 10% of the world's varieties of trees are threatened with extinction, and nearly 80% of ancient forests have been destroyed. Naturally the plastics and other industries would challenge the premises and assumptions that claim environmental superiority for timber, but you may be surprised to learn that leading environmental NGOs, including Friends of the Earth (FoE) (www.foe.co.uk/pubsinfo/briefings/txt/wood4trs.txt), Greenpeace (http://xs2.greepeace.org/~forests/) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) (www.wwf-uk.org/news/news72.htm), have severely criticised the timber industry on its environmental performance. While such organisations have also criticised the petrochemicals industry, their commentary on the timber industry serves to balance the environmental debate on PVC- window materials. In its report, "Seeing the Wood for the Trees - What the UK Timber Industry Doesn't Tell You About the World's Forests"( www.foe.co.uk/pubsinfo/briefings/txt/wood4trs.txt).

Friends of the Earth portray a quite different picture of the timber industry, and associated forestry issues, to the one commonly perceived by the public and specifiers. In this report, FoE claim The [timber] industry does not have adequate evidence to substantiate its claims that timber is, overall, better for the environment than any other material.

  • The timber industry's forest management practices (including tree planting) can damage the environment.
  • The temperate and boreal forests of the world are far from being sustainably managed.
  • Logging for timber is causing deforestation.
  • The timber industry does not have adequate evidence to show that it is helping to meet the threat of climatechange, and it may even be adding to the problem.

In 2005, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheriesand Forestry commissioned anoverview of the impact of illegal logging on Australian imports of forest products to help develop the Government's policy options. The report estimated that in 2003-04, up to nine per cent of Australia's forest product imports, or approximately AUD 400 million invalue, was from potentially illegal or suspected illegal sources." In the affected product lines windows and doors were included.

Commonwealth of Australia, Bringing Down the Axe on Illegal Logging, 2007(available at) http://www.daff.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/408501/DAFF-Illegal-Logging-Policy.pdf

We offer to our customers the opportunity to recycle - the customer need only contact us and we will pick up the disused upvc window frames and either recut into samples at our facility or send them to the vynil recycling facility. Furthermore, the consumer may wish to reconsider use of popular aluminium windows based on the environmental damage associated with alumium production. In fact, in the conclusion of his study of aluminium, timber and pvc windows, Dr Asif found that "Aluminium frames cause the highest burden to the environment because of the dangerous pollutants release and high energy consumption during aluminium production.

Dr. Asif, M. et al, Life Cycle of Window Materials - A Comparable Assessment, School of Engineering, Napier University Edinburgh, 2002.

PVC is perfectly safe and this is why it is used for bottles for mineral water, bags for blood transfusions, and fine bore tubing that is inserted into premature babies. PVC can be crystal clear or as black as coal, it can be as rigid or as flexible as we choose. It will stand up to extreme conditions and so is greatly used for windows, water pipes and insulation for electric wiring.

Low Maintenace

Upvc is the ideal frame material due to its inherent qualities of resistance to corrosion, fire, water, and sunlight. Apart from the most obvious applications in coastal areas where salt destroys the appearance and function of aluminium windows, while wooden windows must be specially treated with chemicals or paint, upvc frames have also been used in commercial and industrial applications and in areas of high pollution or for high impact winds. In addition, the upvc composition includes ultra-violet components, which reflect the sunlight and resist damage. The profile will not warp because it contains aluminium or steel reinforcement and wont need to be repainted, chemically treated, polished or cleaned. However, cleaning may be required for glass, intermittently, as desired, which will be necessary regardless of the frame material used. Our upvc Double Glazed Windows and Doors are ideal for the get and forget consumer! The low maintenance factor of upvc windows and doors exceeds that of any other frame material, saves your time and energy for the important things in life!   For supplementary material on double glazed low maintenace click here

High Performance

For windows and doors that do more than just open and close, but actually work for you to reduce your household or office energy bill by utilizing an energy efficient profile system and double glazing. Convenient and comfortable in many ways, they are an essential part of insulating your home or office, for a more sustainable living experience. A standard aluminium sliding window can add 40% heating/ cooling loss in the home. Would you purchase an appliance that can only ever operate at a maximum 60% capacity? But this is essentially what you are doing when your home is poorly insulated! The same high performance extends to acoustic insulation, with a potential reduction of 45dB in our casement, awning, tilt&turn and bifold range. The high-tech weather seal in combination with fusion welding of frames and sashes make the windows completely air and water tight - they have been tested to withstand even cyclone strength winds!   Continued on the double glazed high performance page

Added Security

Our Double Glazed Windows and Doors are difficult to break and when they break, they create a lot of noise. Our window units also come equipped with security systems such as multi-point locks, double-locking handles and hinge-side security devices. Windows made out of upvc, can only be forced open from outside with a great deal of ingenuity, time and physical strength. This is because plastic provides a tighter seal around the glass and it does not shrink like wooden frames sometimes do.   More info on double glazed added security

High Quality Hardware

Hardware is an integral part of the window without which the window would not function, and would not open. Quality hardware is essential for smooth operation, especially if double glazing in involved, which can significantly add to the weight of the window or door and fracture any inferior hardware, rendering the window unsafe. After performing many repairs on windows supplied by our competitors, we decided to make our window hardware a point of difference. We sourced hardware among the worlds leading suppliers, for very specialized, high performance applications to ensure that our clients are not disappointed with any aspect of the window or door. Our accomplishment as leaders of innovative solutions for complicated or difficult projects, and our creative cooperation with window hardware suppliers, has created a upvc hardware combination of unsurpassed quality, tested to withstand min of 20,000 cycles and guarantees flawless operation for the users for many years.   Greater detail on double glazed high quality hardware can be found here

BASIX Compliance

With greater concerns about the environmentally detrimental methods and materials of traditional building practices, the government introduced special measures to minimise the long term impact on the environment. By using our products in your home, you will improve the rating of your home, because double glazing rates higher than single glazing in analysis and pvc rates higher than aluminium in terms of thermal performance. In addtion, consider strategic placement of windows and doors to maximise natural light but limit the exposure to midday summer sun, by utilising shade from nearby trees, other buidings, orientation, area and other factors.   To obtain additional information on double glazed basix compliance

Corrosion Resistance

Window Factory Double Glazed Windows and Doors exceed expectations in many hostile environments that are not suitable for other types of materials. Due to the unique properties of upvc, the frame maintains high tensile strength and modulus over a moderate temperature range, low thermal conductivity, and excellent chemical and corrosion resistance to a variety of aggressive substances. In general upvc has good acid and alkali resistance as well as excellent vapour barrier properties and excellent UV resistance. Upvc frames provide many construction advantages due to the material's inherent corrosion resistance, lightweight, ease of fabrication, and other labor-saving characteristics. In addition, upvc frames are high precision and can be manufactured to a tolerable value of +/-3mm, which is ideal for demanding architectural applications.   Continued on the double glazed corrosion resistance page

UV Resistance

We only use quality extrusion that has been rigorously tested for UV radiation in harsh environments in desert or mountain conditions. The profile has been specifically formulated for Australian conditions to thwart potential damage from the sun. Un-reinforced uPVC window profiles have a lack of rigidity and a high coefficient of expansion. To avoid preventable damage, we always reinforce all our windows and door frames with aluminium or steel, according to customer requirements.   Great suggestions and more on double glazed uv resistance can be found here

Waterproof

uPVC Double Glazed Windows and Doors are constructed with the highest precision to keep out water during the rain, storms and even cyclones and have been used many times in marine applications, where their quality is heavily tested. They are far more waterproof than other types of windows as they don't absorb moisture. They will not leak (a common complaint of many owners of aluminium sliding windows) nor will they be damaged by water and rot (a potential problem with wooden windows).   To obtain additional information on double glazed waterproof

Draft Proof

There are significant savings in electricity that will pay for your windows in 6-7 years and will reduce your CO2 emissions by about 100-150kg per year. For an indication of energy efficiency of a window or door, look for the U-value or R-value. U-value measures the overall heat transfer coefficient, or how well the window/door conducts heat and is also the inverse of the R-value. The lower the U-value, the greater a window's resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value. Our windows boast a value of 1.8, which means they perform three times better than an aluminium framed window with a typical value of 5.4-5.6. And since windows can contribute to between 15-40% energy loss in a building, installing the most energy efficient windows available should be the intelligent homeowner's priority.   Examine all the facts on double glazed draft proof page

Manufactured Locally

We don't share the vision of our competitors, for our product to be manufactured in China or India, and are committed to all round excellence in quality and service to our clients. Climate Control

The power of the sun is generally underestimated. In one home, we measured 7kW of solar energy per hour on a sunny day in January, which is enough to some of your home appliances including air conditioners and heaters. This means that the same amount of energy is heating your home as you are using on an appliance to cool it! Upto 40% of heat or cold, depending on the season, can be escaping your home through badly insulated windows. Would you buy an appliance if you were told it could only operate at 60% capacity? And yet if your windows and doors have an inadequate u value score, you could be undermining your efforts to cool/ heat your home. Double Glazed Windows and Doors offer full control of your surroundings through a tight weather seal to insulate your home and make it energy efficient.   For a detailed discussion on the subject of double glazed climate control click here

PrestigeD T84

Rehau quality stands for ambition and power, and these ideas are represented well in the Prestige casement upvc window and door system. The thickness of glazing ranges from 5mm to 33 mm. This double glazed window and door system comes with an overlap that measures 8 to 10 mm located between frame and sash, and this overlap not only helps to eliminate water infiltration and dust penetration, but also aids in saving energy consumption. Design optimisation of reinforcement chambers makes the double glazed window and door made of this profile highly resistant to high wind pressure.   A complete guide for double glazed prestiged t84 can be found here

Handling and Storage

After the double glazed windows are delivered to your home or the construction site, ideally they should be installed as soon as possible, to minimise the risk of accidental damage. However, we understand that this may not be practical if there are other renovation or construction work being completed - in this case, it is best to store the double glazed window/ door frames and glass separately and in an area with limited access, so that the upvc window frames and insulated glass units experience the least movement possible.   Extra information about double glazed handling and storage can be found here

Toughened Glass

Also known as tempered glass, it is a type of safety glass that has increased strength and will usually shatter in small, square pieces when broken. It is used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations. At home you are likely to find toughened glass in the shower and sliding glass patio doors. For commercial structures, it is used in unframed assemblies such as frameless doors, structurally loaded applications and where there is a danger of human impact. Toughened glass is typically four to six times the strength of annealed glass.   Greater detail on double glazed toughened glass can be found here
