Measuring Your Window

The only man who behaves sensibly is my tailor, he takes my measurements anew every time he sees me, while all the rest go on with their old measurements and expect me to fit them.
-- George Bernard Shaw

The most important part of the installation procedure for double glazed windows and doors, comes before you even order your windows. It is critical that you measure your old window opening properly and accurately. Pvc double glazed windows and doors are custom-built and can't be returned if the size ordered was inaccurate. This is why for all replacement windows and doors and some new constructions, our trained technicians will take their own measurements before manufacture. All of our double glazed windows and doors are manufactured to a high accuracy, so ideally you should get the closest fit possible.

The following instructions can be used for cost estimating purposes only:
To measure the width, take size of frame wall-to-wall, in three places-near the top of the window, at the middle and close to the bottom. Consider if you want to keep the same number of openings, and if the size allows for it. To measure the height, also measure from top of the window cavity to the bottom.

Don't assume that all your windows are the same size. Draw a rough sketch of your house and number each window you plan to replace, then measure each of them separately. If you have a number of fixed panels, which are separated by a beam or brickwork - they are considered separate double glazed window panels and are priced accordingly.

Remember that we don't have any standard windows and doors in stock, and we manufacture each window and door to your individual specifications.

It is customary to report your sizes in millimeters, width first, but to avoid confusion it is advisable to always label the sizes with width and length and the window number and/or location. Generally, there is no significant difference in sizes taken by clients and us, so as to affect the price. We would, generally, bear the cost of any marginal rounding or measurement errors, however, this does not extend to accidental omission of half the window length.

Installation of Secondary Double Glazed Windows and Doors involves installing the new Double Glazed Window behind the original window frame, which is retained, so the secondary window becomes adjacent to the existing window.

Sealing

Many people have the impression that all silicone gels on the market are the same, but we have found that their properties and, therefore, suitability varies dramatically. Generally, the descriptions of silicone offer little information as to the correct grade and type for a given application, and because of performance variability, there is no one type of silicone sealant that should be used for everything. Using the incorrect silicone or improper use may cause joint failure, contamination of surfaces because of poor application, excessive movement in the sealed joint.   For more information double glazed sealing

Tinted Glass

Ordinary tinted glass is popular because it reduces heat gain and carbon emmissions, although it also marginally reduces visible light transmission. High Performance or Low-e tinted glass or spectrally selective tinted glass reduces solar heat gain to below that of ordinary bronze/ gray tint but has a visible transmittance closer to clear glass. The tint has little effect on the U-factor but reduces solar gain considerably, which can reduce the need for air conditioning in the summer. Tinted glass is useful in controlling glare - especially for those windows facing east or north east. Return the sunlight not glare into your home.   To obtain additional information on double glazed tinted glass

Low E Glass

Low-e glass brings out the best that technology has to offer for improving your views and comfort! A cool, metal oxide coating is applied to clear or tinted glass, so that the appearance and performance are the same regardless of glass thickness. Low-e glass is recommended by many energy efficiency experts as a result of high performance combined with aesthetics. Low-E glass typically cost about 15% more than ordinary glass, but they reduce energy use by as much as 30-50%, by using most of the heat gain in winter but keep the harmful UV rays out during the summer, and when used in insulated glass units - can have even better benefits.
For hot climates, low-E coating should be applied to the outside pane of glass. If the windows are designed to provide heat energy in the winter and keep heat inside the house typical of cold climates, the Low-E coating will maximise benefit by being on the inside pane of glass.   Supplementary advice on double glazed low e glass
